Irina Bokova, the director-general of UNESCO, will give a lecture on confronting significant threats to the world’s cultural heritage.
As director-general of UNESCO — the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization — Bokova is leading the response to the destruction and leading of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Syria, including the ancient city of Palmyra that was recently retaken from ISIS militants.
A native of Bulgaria, Bokova has led UNESCO since November 2009. She is the first woman to lead the organization and in 2013 won re-election to a second term as UNESCO chief.
